Until 1883, Tracht or traditional fashion had one very simple raison d'être: to clothe workers in the stables, atop mountains, in pastures or the forest and protect them against cold, rain, heat and vermin. But at one point, Lederhosen were banned for a short time, prompting city dweller Joseph Vogl to band together with five other Tracht enthusiasts, who on 25 August 1883 founded the first national costume club. The event was an insult to farmers and also caused quite a stir among city residents.

Nevertheless, beautifully decorated Dirndl and handsome Lederhosen have managed to hold their own over the years. What were once exclusively work clothes is increasingly donned for festive occasions.

Today hundreds of "Trachten" associations with more than 300,000 members still celebrate this traditional apparel.
